Commerce Department

Whould you have wandered to the third floor of the old Administration Building back in 1929-1930, you would have walked into the infant Commerce Department, enjoying its first year of life. The former basketball court had been divided in half, a partition erected, thus providing quarters for Band, Instrumentaltion, and Commerce.

After the long, steep climb it was imperative that you remain long enough to regain your breath. Then too, you were attracted to the strains of youthful violins, or the pigeons as they paraded about in the windows. However, inside commerce students were working as though to make up lost time, and unaware of "stringed" or "feathered" neighbors.

This comparatively new department seems to have come as an answer to a genuine need. ITs graduates have gone out to jobs near and far. We find that the commerce teachers of this District are composed largely of Northwestern graduates. Many are employed in Kansas high schools.

Commerce is a most versatile field. While the greater number of our graduates go into teaching, we find many who are employed in stenographic and secretarial positions in Alva and neighboring cities. There is still another field which some graduates choose and that is the firld of accounting and bookkeeping. You will find our graudates bending over ledgers in Alva, Enid, Oklahoma City and other places.

The commerce graduate has a three-way vocation. Thus, there is such an avenue of opportunities that business and teaching frequently tempt the student to leave school before he is thoroughly trained. That this is a mistake is proven by the fact that many of these students return, and complete their work. They have learned that while an elementary knowledge of commercial subjects prepares them for a position, in order to gain managerial and executive positions they must be as thoroughly trained as individuals in any other field or profession.
