1937 The Ranger Annual
Northwestern State Teachers' College

1937 Juniors
Next Year's Seniors

JuniorsOn September 9, 1934, a large number of freshmen enrolled at Northwestern State Teachers College. Before these freshmen could become acquainted with each other and their routine they were summoned to a meeting at which their superiors, the sophomores, gave them a list of rules to follow until Homecoming. There followed weeks during which belt lines, black and red caps, and dateless freshmen boys prevailed. Those who disobeyed the rules were severely punished by the sophomores in a special chapel program. However, the fresh avenged themselves once during these weeks -- they pulled the sophomores through Hatfield's lake in the annual Freshman-Sophomore tug-of-war.

Soon the freshmen had found for themselves a place in debate, football, basketball, and baseball squads. During Homecoming they won first prize for exhibiting the most beautiful float in the parade. Their class queen, Miss Gerna Lee Stambaugh, was an attendant at the coronation of the Ranger Queen.

The next fall these freshmen returned to Rangerland as sophomores. Determined to make it a hard year for the frosh they immediately listed rules for their inferiors. At Hatfield's they pulled the frosh through the lake, again winning the annual tug-of-war. The under-classmen attended a party-dance, given by the Frosh on December 6, in Waytt gym and the Legion Hall. Not to be outdone, the sophomores gave the frosh a party at the legion Hall on March 6.

The class elected as their queens Misses Gertrude Sumpter and Virginia Rikli. Delegates to the student council were Miss Jaunita McClaflin and Ralph Clifford. Miss Myrltis Gann and Charles Campbell, class sponsors, did their part in making this a successful year.

Modified by their added dignity the same class returned to Northwestern on September 8 of this year as juniors -- upper classmen. Class officers elected were: Kenneth Wilson, President for the third consecutive time; Max Jack, Vice-president; Miriam White, secretary; John Smith, treasurer; Juanita McClaflin, reporter. A member of the class, Ralph Clifford, was elected by the STudent Council as Student Council President. Gerna Lee Stambaugh and Georgia Fay Andrews were chosen class queens. In the Homecoming parade their float won first in the comic section.

Work and business were put aside for a party given by the seniors in Horace Mann Hall on January 8, 1937. Determined not to be surpassed in the social art, the juniors named April 30 as the date for the Junior-Senior Prom-party. The sponsors, Miss Jean Holland and C. C. Bush, class officers and members, planned and worked to make this the most successful social function of the year.

Thus the school year ended. The juniors will be seniors next fall -- some will not reutrn to school; new students will take their places. Yet those who return will continue to contribute their part in making Northwestern a democratic and an outstanding college.
