Yearbook - Explanation of Theme

The feudal lard had jurisdiction with right to service from all who dwelt within his boundaries. The members of the manorial community were not landlords but tenants.

Their lands did not lie in compact pieces but in small strips scattered widely among similiar strips belonging to fellow tenants and distinguished only by a norrow ridge of turf or a furrow left by the plow. The tenant enjoyed the returns of his lands, paying his lord a regular rent or by preforming some labor service.

Amalogous to this is the theme of the 1926 Ranger.

The feudal knight represents Knowledge, Wisdom, Power.

The tenants are the students whose minds are being cultured among the minds, thoughts and ideas of similar students. Bound by strait vows to fairthful service they reap the reward of Knighthood.

In just this way Northwestern students by loyalty to Alma Mater become likewise Masters of Men.
